HOW-TO SCRAPBOOK GUIDE

What follows is the instructional document we made to help My Story Matters volunteers better understand how to build the scrapbooks with the raw materials they'll be given. We also built a reference sheet which can be seen below.

Hello! On behalf of My Story Matters, I want to thank you for volunteering to help tell the stories of real heroes who live among us. Your efforts are so important to My Story Matters and the children we empower. Thank you for your willingness to serve—it means everything to those who need your service.

To get started, let’s go over the materials with which you’ve been provided and make sure that you have everything you need:

For each scrapbook, you’ll need

  • a scrapbook album,

  • twenty 6x8 pocket protectors (some mixed and some full),

  • ten pieces of 12x12 patterned cardstock,

  • twelve pieces of 4.5x6.5 patterned cardstock (we call these Journal Mounting Cards),

  • six 2x12 border strip cardstock,

  • a sheet of upper case and lower case alphabet stickers,

  • 3 pages of cut-out quotes,

  • the My Hero Journey logo,

  • and something to cut with, adhesive, and a ruler.

You’ll be turning those 12x12 cards into nine 6.25x8.25 cards, thirteen 5.5-inch squares, and one 5-inch square. The easiest way to make sure you aren’t wasting any of the cardstock is to first make a cut at 5.5 inches all the way down. Then, use the larger side of the remaining card to make your 6.25x8.25 card. Cut two 5.5 inch squares from the smaller side. After you have thirteen of those 5.5 inch squares, you’ll cut one 5 inch square.

From the border strips, you’ll need five 2x4.5 pieces and eight 2x5.5 pieces.

From the journal mounting cards (and from any other remaining scraps from the 12x12 cards), you’ll cut eight 3x4 cards and three 4.5-inch squares.

With that finished, cut out all the quotes, lyrics, link, and the My Hero Journey logo. Make sure to stay just inside the dotted lines to get a clean look.

From here, it’s just about following the steps that were included with your kit. If you get confused about which pieces you need for a set page, refer to the provided images and the page guide you received. I’ll walk you through each page so you have an idea of what it will look like once it’s all come together.

Cover

You’ll use the 5-inch square, one of your 4.5-inch squares, and the alphabet stickers to spell out “My Path.” You’ll want to use a ruler here to make sure that everything is straight—especially the alphabet letters.

1A

You’ll need a 5.5-inch square, the My Story Matters song lyrics, and the URL to download the song for this page. This is the reverse of the cover—don’t let the numbering fool you! From here out, every two pages will be the front and back of a single page, as detailed in the table above.

1B

You’ll use a 4.5-inch square and alphabet stickers. The student will fill in their own name, so your stickers should just spell out “I am.” Be sure to leave enough space for the student’s name!
